Book Challenge 2024

Goodreads seems to be slowly upgrading their site and have deprecated user_challenges; it’s now called readingchallenges and all links I’ve used in prior Book Challenge entries are now broken. Yay, such progress!

In any case, the tradition continues. I set a smaller goal of 77 books with the hope of hitting at least 60 books; I was anticipating less reading time for a possibly tumultous 2024.

So how did I do?

Stats upon prior year stats overlaid on book covers

So I completed 39 books in 2024. But here’s something startling for you…

I did not log any manga during this challenge! I did log a couple of graphic novels and unscrolled Webtoon collections but no manga at all, not a single volume. Looking at my kitsu.io stats, it turns out that I barely read any manga in 2024. This means that “As the Gods Will” is yet again not completed! Maybe in 2025? Hah!

I did read fewer books this year but a good chunk of them were stellar. Edible Economics and Free Will were excellent pieces of literature. Big Game was a great sequel to Wanted. The graphic adaptation of Lies My Teacher Told Me was a difficult but impactful read for me. Portions of Yellowface and Zero Sum Game were brilliant. And I really enjoyed Osamu Dazai’s Schoolgirl.

And that’s my 2024 Book Challenge in a few words. My local library intends to run a reading challenge for its 150th anniversary in 2025 so I’ll likely be using that as next year’s Book Challenge. See you next year!
